UVU Conference on the Arts--a Report

On October 1, UVU hosted a Conference on the Arts. It was so worth the drive and the guest teacher and the extra lesson planning to get to go!

Keynote speaker Mary Helen Immordino-Yang presented brain research that changed my world forever. You can find her research at her website, http://www-bcf.usc.edu/~immordin/. Basically, her research validates the idea that learning with affect, that is, learning that reaches our emotions, changes not only our brains but our physiology--for the rest of our lives! This far-reaching research has implications for arts instruction but also for new thinking about high-stakes testing.

District Art Handbook

I sent out an email about putting together a district art handbook. It turns out that I'm getting more questions than advice. I thought that a district handbook was something that everyone else had, and I just wanted to get on the band wagon. Apparently not. That's okay, we can figure it out together.

Here are my ideas: I want to unite my committee of school reps and thought that a compiling district handbook together could help with that. Washington County has one that we'll use as a guide, but I'm still trying to think of what else will go into it.

I imagine we'll have different sections for elementary, middle and high school. I want to list all district employees with arts endorsements or subject specialties. I think we'll try to compile lists of all arts resources in the state, grant writing information, procedures and policies relating to the arts. I think we could also list the types of concerts and competitions our high school arts groups usually participate in. I think this book can be updated regularly as these things change. It would be more of an online document than a printed and bound thing.

I think I also want to include a section with advice about how to form a school/parent art team, how to look for funding, how to put on school arts shows, and the like.

Again, if any of you have advice, suggestions or questions, please respond here. I'd love to see a healthy discussion, to help me gather my thoughts. Thanks!

Arts Express

Hey friends-
I am laying the foundation for Arts Express for next summer June 14,15 and possibly 16th. Participant reviews from this summer asked for more time and the chance to choose more breakout sessions. Deb Bjorska from the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts will be the Keynote speaker. I would appreciate any input you have. How could this arts conference best serve the teachers in your district?

Utah DACs Together

Thanks for the wonderful DAC retreat at Red Butte Gardens.
There we decided to share community on a DAC blog--and here it is!
Everyone may post, anytime. Please share your thoughts and your hearts. Let everyone know what's going well in your district, and what you want to work on.
This is our way to "be" together even if we can't always be together.
